Poems about transience. This is close to the most important theme in K-M Skalkenæs’ poetry. It just keeps popping up.

Why is that? Well, transience is an innate part of who we are and how we live. We are transient being, however much we like to pretend otherwise. Our surroundings change and we change – and that’s how life is.

K-M Skalkenæs embraces this in her poetry. It is easy to describe, but it can be hard to live with. There is no way of turning back or freezing time. And she firmly believes that it is for the best.

Transience is a thing of beauty, if you choose to accept it for what it is, and live with it instead of against it.

Poetry Is Contrary To Nature

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

Poetry is contrary to nature in the sense that it is meant (or at least by its poet dreamt) to stand apart and last when all else follows its natural cause and ends up becoming the past. But what is […]

Når jeg lukker øjnene

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

Foranderlige fjord

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

Jeg står i vand til over hovedet – men det er der ikke længere (vandet) – omkring mig breder sig en flade af grønt, bølgende græs – der er ingen kontrast til det bølgende vand – kun diget adskiller – […]

Vinden der blæser

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

En magnetisk kraft skubber mig væk – jeg rækker frem men jeg kan aldrig nå – en vind blæser mig bagud; det er den som alle mennesker holdes nede ad – småting, jordting, tidsbegrænsning, med værdi de ikke har – […]

New Poem: Lace

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

SPRING: The buds that unfold and grow, the dew that resumes at night, droplets in beams of light, dispersing remnants of snow. SUMMER: The skin on the back of your hand, the sunshine through the trees, the veins that pattern […]

My Antiquities

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

The things I valued not so long ago – the things for which I lived and the ones I left untold are all now piled together into one close-packed rhyme for all now share in fate: They’ve fallen out of […]

Ode to My Elementary School

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

A pile of rubble, bricks and timber scattered on a plain. Some cluttered lines of trees alone is what remain. And weeds are sprouting through the waste uncaring and unkind. But then again – how could they care – does […]

All There Is Left Now

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

An open, empty field covered only by the grass where something used to be – well, something had to pass I stare at the empty space and cannot fathom this – all that is left is emptiness Passing shooting stars […]

Candleflames

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

We’re candleflames flickering in the wind – the smallest change of weather and we all blow out again.

How Ironic

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

How ironic; a symbol of youth is the sun – an ancient-old guardian whose youth is long gone.

Gone

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

The softness of the quiet nights is gone. The roar of emptiness now shears its way through every place where lights were shortly on. The smoothness of a quiet day is gone. The drizzle of the sadness dims all colours […]

Love, What Are You?

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

Achievements – what are they? They’ll vanish when I’m gone, and though my heart is young my soul is ancient-old. I’ve known sorrow, known pleasure, and love is all I have to show, a love impeding every chance to grow […]

Ghost From My Childhood

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

Memories I’d forgotten surge forward to beleaguer my brain when I see your face again Forever ago we lay in the grass in my parents yard after class looking up into the branches of the old beech tree, wondering how […]

Change and Perpetuity

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

I stand at the shore where the sea once was and I know not that’s how it is. I’ve looked at the oaks my entire life; they were here before me and they will remain. I stand at the shore […]

The Wait

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

I waited for the snowfall but finally when it came the snowflakes melted in the air before they reached the ground and all remained the same. I waited for the sunshine but when I finally caught a beam it had […]

The Wasteland Where the Slaughterhouse Was

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

Overgrown with weeds, squeezed into place between apartment blocks – irregular in shape, a vast expanse of emptiness and plants – a little jungle in the middle of the city, framed by makeshift fences meant to keep intruders out (the […]

Heart of Rust

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

Old ship, come to rest, torn yet stately, here at bay. Pulsing with the lapping waves pensively at anchor in the harbor, nested in the middle of the city. Red and latticed resting in its decorative decay. Like a withered […]

The Rise and the Fall

Posted By K-M Skalkenæs

Out of the ocean rises it, transparent in its beauty, cocks head in joyful majesty and marvels at its power, then bends its neck when nearing land, in curiosity – consumes itself in foam and then collapses on the sand; […]
