New Poem: “She Doesn’t Understand Poetry”

My mom doesn’t understand poetry –
she cannot feel how rhythm
linked with words
creates new meaning
and allows things to be heard
and remembered through requiring
the usage of the mind –

you don’t feed people poetry –
they have to chew
and you can’t help them to –

My mom doesn’t understand poetry –
she thinks it’s too hard to understand
and also too emotional
since she thinks it a place to unload
unwanted emotions for poets;
some emotional garbage dump –

poetry, the oldest written form
with its proud heritage
and rich history –
relegated to only be a resting place
for thoughts and feelings no one wants to have
and no one wants to hear?

My mom doesn’t understand poetry
me –
