So far away from me I feel you still
as dawn’s soft approach behind the trees –
a changed direction in the gentle breeze
that brings your breath to me on restless winds –
the night dies slowly, leaves me in the light,
my shadow trails its lonely path along the grass –
the light I see brings darkness now to you,
the night and its remembrances descend –
I walk through woods where you have never been
and think, and see, and breathe in only you –
the sun shoots rays at me with sharp demands
that I acknowledge what is here and now –
light brushes feelings callously aside
and looks me into tired, burdened eyes –
the day begins, and so again
my longing hides –
