Poems about identity.
When K-M Skalkenæs writes about identity, it is primarily related to being a poet. It may be secondarily related to gender, but that is a much less important factor.
The poet has struggled with being a poet. It wasn’t a choice – it was rather something forced upon her as a last resort for expression. There was nobody to listen, and speech didn’t cut deep enough. So she invented her own form of speech through rhymes and meter.
And guess what? This is not a success story. It is a story of personal integrity and of gritting one’s teeth and persevering with absolutely no support whatsoever from anybody – not even one’s own family.
But at the end of the day, knowing who you are and standing up for yourself has got to count for something.
