New Poem: “Upstream Battle”

I’ve swum upstream my entire life
now I wake at 30 from the dream –
with lots of loss and little won
and time no longer on my side –

The battle lost perhaps it’s time
to slip downstream at last –
join the mindless herd of cattle
in their futile little pastimes?

These days I sometimes think I would
but no; the thought alone dismays –
the reasons to struggle never cease
and so I doubt I even could –

Struggling for breath I forge my way on –
upstream, upstream till I make it home –
