New Poem: “Currents”

The sea is my constant companion – an undercurrent in my life –
I’ve always heard its whisper – it never leaves my side –

I’ve sailed it since my childhood – I know its moods and tides –
buoyed up by its thoughtful waves, I’ve seen the sun set and rise –

Yet I wouldn’t claim to know it – as nobody really can –
its depths are hidden away – its thoughts unknown to a human –

It is like my thoughts of you – they come and go as they please –
they surge, they swell, disappear – yet return again with ease –

And if I could I would keep you – as close to my heart as the sound
of the waves on the Ravnsborg shore – that in my dreams resound –

But you cannot be contained – no more than the sea ever can –
so I drift along alone – on these currents I don’t understand –
